What a service on your drive involves

A service is the one job most people put off, because it means losing the car for a day and arranging lifts, and a mobile mechanic takes that reason away. Andy arrives at the time agreed, at your home or your workplace, and does the service where the car is parked. An interim service is the oil and filter change plus the checks that keep a car safe between full services: fluids, brakes, tread and pressures, lights, belts, hoses, a look underneath. A full service goes further, with the filters the car is due, the plugs on a petrol car when they are due, and a longer list of checks and adjustments. He uses the service schedule for your make and model so the car gets what it is due rather than a one-size list, and he stamps the book or records it digitally, whichever the car has. As he goes he photographs the work, the old filter next to the new one, the oil, anything worn he has found, and sends the pictures to you, so you can see what was done rather than take it on trust. If he finds something that needs doing, a brake pad on the limit, uneven wear on one edge of a tread, a small leak, he tells you then, with a price, and you decide.

Interim service

Engine oil and filter, fluid levels, brake check, tread and pressures, lights, wipers, belts and hoses, a look underneath. The right choice for a car doing high mileage between full services.

Full service

Everything in the interim service, plus the air filter, pollen filter and fuel filter where the schedule calls for them, spark plugs on a petrol car when due, and a longer list of checks and adjustments to the maker's schedule.

Photographs of the work

Old parts next to new, the state of anything worn, the oil that came out. Sent to your phone. One customer used Andy's photographs in a dispute with the dealer who had sold them the car.

What Andy needs from you

  1. The reg. It tells him the engine, so he brings the right oil and filters.
  2. Where the car will be and a time that suits you. You do not need to stay.
  3. The service book or app if the car has one, so it can be stamped or recorded.

What he will tell you straight

If the schedule says your car is due a part that it plainly does not need yet, he says so and leaves it. If he finds something the schedule did not ask about but that will cost you more later, he shows you the photograph and gives you a price. Nothing is done that you have not said yes to.

Questions people ask

Can a service really be done on a driveway?

Yes. Oil, filters, plugs, checks and adjustments are all done on the drive with the car on stands where it needs to be lifted. A flat, level place to park is all it takes.

Do I need to be there?

For a quick word at the start and the end. The rest of the time you can be at work, and plenty of customers are.

Which oil do you use?

The grade and specification the maker sets for your engine, which is why the reg matters: it tells Andy the exact engine before he sets off.

Full or interim, which do I need?

Tell Andy the mileage and when it was last serviced and he will say. Roughly: a full service once a year, an interim in between if you do a lot of miles.
