MOT in Tunbridge Wells, booked and handled

An MOT happens at an MOT test station, not on a driveway. What Andy does is everything around it: booking it, getting the car there and back if you want, and fixing what needs fixing before or after.

How an MOT works with a mobile mechanic

The test itself is done at a test station, by the station, under the DVSA's rules, and no mobile mechanic can change that. So the honest version of an MOT service from a man with a van is this. You tell Andy the reg and when the test is due, and he books it. If you would rather not lose a morning to it he collects the car from your home or your workplace, takes it in, waits for the result, and brings it back to you with the certificate or the fail sheet. Before it goes in he can look over the things that fail cars for silly reasons, a bulb, a wiper, tread on the limit, a number plate light, and put them right on your drive so the car is not failed on something that costs a few pounds and a retest. If it fails on something bigger, brakes, suspension, a leak, he tells you what it failed on in plain words, what it will cost to put right, and whether it is worth putting right on a car of that age. Then he does the work, and the car goes back in for its retest. The whole thing takes a phone call from you and none of your time off work.

Before the test

Bulbs, wipers, washer fluid, horn, the plate lights, tread depth and pressures, anything loose or rattling underneath. These are the cheap fails, and a look over on the drive the week before saves a retest.

After a fail

The fail sheet says what is wrong. Andy reads it with you, tells you what is worth doing, does it on the drive where it can be done there, and gets the car back in for the retest.

Collection and delivery

If you want it, Andy collects the car and brings it back. If you would rather drop it to him, that works too. Say which when you enquire.

What Andy needs from you

  1. The reg, so he knows the car and when the MOT is due.
  2. Where the car is, and whether you want it collected.
  3. Any warning lights or noises you have noticed. It changes what he checks first.

What he will tell you straight

If your car is going to fail on something that is not worth fixing at its age and value, Andy says so before you spend money on a test. His customers write that he offered them the lowest-cost route every time and gave honest advice, and that is the standard on MOTs too.

Questions people ask

Does Andy do the MOT test himself?

No. The test is done at an MOT test station. Andy books it, can collect and deliver the car, checks it over before it goes in, and fixes anything it fails on.

Can you fix what it failed on?

Nearly always, and usually on your driveway. Brakes, suspension parts, bulbs, wipers, exhaust sections, leaks. Anything that needs a ramp for a full day he will tell you about and can collect the car for.

What if I have lost track of when the MOT is due?

Type the reg into the box above. The DVLA record shows the MOT due date, and you can see it before you send anything.

Can I drop the car to you instead?

Yes. Collection and delivery, or you drop it off, whichever suits you.
