What can be done on a drive, and what cannot

A good mobile mechanic is honest about the edge of what a van can do, and Andy's customers say he is. The list of what can be done where the car is parked is longer than most people think: batteries and alternators, starter motors, belts and pulleys, hoses and clips, thermostats and water pumps on most engines, radiators, coil packs and plugs, sensors, exhaust sections, suspension arms, springs and shock absorbers, drop links, bushes, wheel bearings on many cars, window regulators, door locks, the electrical faults that a proper diagnostic tool finds, and the everyday jobs that stop a car passing an MOT. What cannot be done on a drive is the work that needs the engine or gearbox out, a full day under a ramp, or a press and a workshop bench: a clutch on most cars, a head gasket, a timing chain on an engine that needs stripping to reach it. When it is one of those Andy says so at the start, because starting a job on a drive that cannot be finished there leaves you worse off than you began. He can collect the car and bring it back once the work is done, or tell you plainly that on a car of that age and value the repair is not worth doing, and one of his reviews is from exactly that day: a suspected head gasket, could not be done there and then, and what the customer took away was that he had been thorough and had given genuine advice.

Done on the drive

Batteries, alternators, starters, belts, hoses, thermostats, water pumps, radiators, coils and plugs, sensors, exhaust sections, suspension parts, bearings, locks and window regulators, and most of what fails an MOT.

Collected and brought back

Clutches, head gaskets, timing chains that need the engine stripped, anything that needs a ramp for a day. Andy tells you which yours is before he starts.

Photographs and old parts

Whatever the job, you see the old part and you get the pictures. It is how you know what you paid for.

What Andy needs from you

  1. The reg and what the car is doing: the noise, the light, the smell, when it started.
  2. Where the car is and whether it can be moved. If it is not driveable, say so.
  3. A level spot to work, and the keys.

What he will tell you straight

Whether it is worth fixing. That is the sentence people remember, and it is the one most garages will not say. A repair that costs more than the car is worth is a repair you should hear about before it starts, not after.

Great service

Andrew was very knowledgeable and tried to fix my issue with my car. Unfortunately, he suspected a head gasket issue and this could not be done on the day but he was very thorough in his work and always offered me the cheapest options and gave me very genuine advice.

Questions people ask

Can you fix it today?

Ring and ask. Andy tells you the truth about his day rather than promising a time he cannot keep. A lot of jobs are done on the first visit because the reg tells him what parts to bring.

What if the car will not start?

Tell him what it does when you turn the key. A flat battery, a starter motor, a fuel or ignition fault all sound different, and most are fixed where the car stands.

Do you use new parts?

New parts, to the specification the car needs. Old parts are shown to you and photographed.

What if it needs a garage?

He says so before starting, and can collect the car and bring it back when the work is done.
