Brake work on the drive

Brakes are the job people ring a mobile mechanic about most, because the symptoms are hard to ignore and hard to describe: a squeal that started last week, a grinding when you brake at the end of the road, a shudder through the steering wheel at speed, a pull to one side, a pedal that goes further down than it used to. Andy comes to the car, takes the wheels off on your drive, and looks. Most of the time it is pads, or pads and discs, and those are done there and then with the car on stands, one axle at a time, the old parts laid out on the drive so you can see the wear for yourself and photographed for your phone. A pad worn down to the metal is why a grinding noise cannot wait; a warped disc is why the wheel shudders; a caliper that has stuck is why one wheel is hot and the car pulls. He will tell you which one you have got, what it will cost, and whether the discs can stay or need to go. If it is something he cannot finish on a drive, a brake pipe that has corroded through, say, he tells you that before starting rather than leaving you with a car in bits, and he can collect it and bring it back.

The noise, the pull, the shudder

Squeal: usually pads near the end. Grinding: pads gone, metal on metal, do not leave it. Shudder at speed: a warped or worn disc. Pull to one side: a sticking caliper or a seized slider. Soft pedal: fluid or air in the system, sometimes a leak.

Done on the drive, one axle at a time, with the car on proper stands. The old parts are shown to you, not thrown in the van. New pads bedded in before he hands the car back.

Great service, will now be my go to!

Second time using Andrew, got a new car and the dealer sold it to us with dodgy break discs and pads. Within a few hours of messaging Andrew was here repairing what was needed as he had some free time come up. Advised of what he felt needed other work too so will be booking back in for this on arrival of parts. He also ensured he had plenty of photos which was extremely helpful now we are in dispute with the dealer. He will be our go to for when we need stuff doing, fair prices and great service

Questions people ask

Can brakes be done on a driveway?

Yes. Pads, discs, calipers and most brake work are done with the car on stands on a level surface. A brake pipe replacement or a full system rebuild may need a ramp, and Andy will say so.

Do I need discs as well as pads?

Not always. If the discs are above their minimum thickness and not scored or warped they can stay. Andy measures them and tells you, and photographs them so you can see why.

How long does a pad and disc change take?

Depends on the car and whether anything is seized. Andy gives you a time when he gives you the price.

Is the noise dangerous?

A grinding noise means the pad material is gone. Ring today. A squeal is a warning. A grinding noise is a stop-and-ring.
